About East York Learning Experience

At East York Learning Experience, every learner’s journey begins with an individual assessment to understand their current literacy, numeracy, and digital skills, as well as the goals they want to achieve.

We then create a personalized learning plan and carefully match each learner with a trained volunteer tutor. Together, they meet in weekly one-to-one sessions focused on building the skills needed to reach the learner’s goals.

Every learner is different. The pace and duration depend on each person’s starting point, learning goals, and progress.

Our learners come to us with many different goals. They may want to:

• Find or keep a job
• Return to school or training
• Improve reading, writing, or math skills
• Build confidence using computers and technology
• Manage everyday tasks more independently

We believe adults learn best when instruction is personalized, practical, relevant, encouraging, and goal-focused.

Our programs follow Ontario’s Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF), using task-based learning, ongoing assessment, and measurable milestones to help learners build skills and confidently move toward employment, further education, and greater independence.

Learning Pathways

Our programs follow Ontario’s Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF), which helps learners build the skills they need to achieve their personal goals. Every learner works toward one of five goal pathways:

Independence
Build the skills needed for everyday life, such as reading signs, managing money, using a computer, completing forms, or preparing for a driver’s licence test. In 2025, 36% if our learners chose this path. 

Employment
Develop the reading, writing, digital, and workplace skills needed to find a job, succeed at work, or pursue new career opportunities.

Adult High School
Strengthen literacy and math skills to prepare for adult high school, earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, and build confidence in academic learning.

Post-Secondary Education
Prepare for college or university by improving reading, writing, math, research, study, and digital skills.

Apprenticeship
Develop the literacy, numeracy, and workplace skills needed to enter or succeed in a skilled trade, including understanding technical language, completing training, and writing certification exams.
